This is an interesting project to get you out and about. While surfing the web on day I came across some very old photos of my neighborhood. I have to thank the Vintage Toronto Facebook group for this. I printed the old photos as started walking around to line op the angles. Some “finds” were obvious, but some were more of a challenge as the building did not exist any longer. Google earth is also a good source for finding locations, but to get the view just right, you will have to go to the location is person.
It also is a great way to meet people. I have been approached while setting up a shot by interested passers by. I got a few stories about the area from the past. Locals are very willing to share, just respect property lines and privacy.
The results are very satisfying.
To line up the before and now images, I used a little android app called PhotoGrid. It was quick and simple.
So, get out and visit some local history. It is fun and rewarding…..and you get some exercise.

We got to Haliburton this year to discover the old girl got a lovely new coat of paint!
She looks very proud in her shiny new coat. I hope it lasts a while before someone has to come along and deface it with scratches and paint bombs.
Kudos to the restoration crew….
William was very impressed……

The joy of having a good polarizing filter. I held back because of the expense of it, but when they were on sale at Henry’s I jumped in. I bought one for all my lenses.
The results are very impressive, I am kicking myself for waiting so long. This shot was taken with the noon sun overhead.
Simply worth their weight is gold….really.

These guys can be tough to shoot at the best of times. This year it has been very challenging. I filled the feeder and they were at it in minutes. They seemed to spook very easily though. Sitting very still by the window did not guarentee their arrival. It almost seemed started to be a cruel joke, as they seemed to appear just after I got tired and put the camera down.
cheeky monkeys!

More Macro goodness. This 100mm lens is a lot of fun. Very challenging when hand held. The DoF is very small and even a little waver in the subject will produce blurry results.
I am learning a lot about patience, especially on breezy days.
I think I also will need a quicker tripod.

Something very simple can be very elegant. I have the habit of over thinking things. This problem does show up in my photography on occasion.
Sometimes it seems that I am trying to cram too much into a shot.
I was at the cottage on the weekend and I passed this bud. It stood there alone, out of place, and surrounded by short wild flowers.
It was begging to be noticed, so I did.
I think the result has a quiet dignity.
The next day it was open, so I stopped again.

Sometimes a photo op just jumps out and hits you.
I was walking to work this morning a bam!. It was a very foggy morning and the sun was just rising. The reflection off the RBC tower was cutting through the thick fog. The only camera I had was my crappy cell camera. The good thing is that I could post it to Flickr, while riding the bus north on Bay street.
I would had loved to have my 60d with me, but you have to work with what you have at the time.

Guildwood, a set on Flickr.
This is a little gem is in Guildwood. Totally worth wandering around and getting glimpses of Toronto’s past before glass and steel.
